Reverse Engineering

No drawing? Send us the part. We measure it, redraw it in CAD, and machine replacements. Used for discontinued components, obsolete machinery spare parts, and custom-fit modifications.

What Reverse Engineering Means at EKINSUN

If you have a part but no drawing — a worn component from a machine that's no longer supported, a sample you want replicated, or a part where the original supplier has closed — we can measure it, create the manufacturing drawing, and produce new parts.

This is one of our most requested services, particularly from maintenance engineers keeping older equipment running and from distributors sourcing replacement parts for discontinued product lines.

Our Reverse Engineering Process

STEP 1
Send the Sample

Ship us your sample part. Even worn, damaged, or partial samples work — we measure the undamaged features and infer the rest from context (what it fits, how it functions).

STEP 2
CMM Measurement

Our TESA CMM measures all critical features: diameters, lengths, thread pitches, angles, and form tolerances. We verify thread standards against published tables (ISO, ASME, BS).

STEP 3
CAD Redraw & Drawing

We create a 3D model and 2D drawing with full dimensions, tolerances, and material specification. You receive the drawing for review and approval before any machining begins.

STEP 4
Machine & Inspect

After drawing approval, we machine the parts and inspect against the drawing. You receive a CMM report confirming the new parts match specification.

What We Can Reverse Engineer

  • Obsolete machinery spare parts — shafts, bushings, gears, brackets, housings where the OEM no longer offers service parts
  • Custom fittings and adapters — non-standard thread combinations, unusual sizes not in catalogs
  • Prototype replication — reproducing a physical prototype in production-quality material
  • Modified versions of existing parts — take an existing part, change one or more features
  • Competitor parts analysis — measure and reproduce for your own production (with appropriate IP considerations)

What We Need from You

Ideally: the physical sample part. If you can't ship the original (it's still in service), send us:

  • Detailed photographs from multiple angles
  • Hand measurements with calipers — OD, ID, lengths, thread pitch estimate
  • Any partial drawings or old catalog pages you have
  • Description of what the part fits (bearing size, mating part dimensions)

We have successfully reverse-engineered parts from photographs and hand measurements when the original was not available to ship.

+

Yes. We accept hand-drawn sketches, photographs, PDF drawings, and any CAD format. For hand sketches, we redraw in 3D CAD and send the model back for your approval before machining. This service is included at no extra charge.
