Clinical Applications — Who Uses 1ml Syringes

Insulin Administration

Insulin-dependent diabetic patients and healthcare providers use 1ml syringes for insulin injection from vials. Despite the widespread adoption of insulin pens, vial-and-syringe remains the standard for: hospital inpatient settings (where pens are not used for infection control reasons), mixing two insulins in one syringe, and patients in lower-income markets where insulin pen devices are not accessible. 0.1ml graduation accuracy is critical for dose precision — particularly for pediatric and sensitive adult patients where small dose variations have significant glycemic impact.

Allergen Skin Testing

Intradermal allergen testing (Mantoux-type technique for allergens) uses a 1ml syringe to deliver 0.02 to 0.05ml of allergen extract intradermally, producing a wheal for size measurement after 15 to 20 minutes. The Luer-slip connection allows rapid needle changes between different allergen extracts during multi-allergen testing sessions. 26G or 27G needles are standard for intradermal skin testing.

Tuberculin Skin Test (Mantoux Test)

The standard Mantoux tuberculin skin test (TST) uses a 1ml syringe to inject 0.1ml of tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) intradermally. A precisely calibrated 0.1ml graduation is essential for consistent test antigen dosing. 27G needles with 6mm to 8mm length are standard for this application.

Aesthetic and Therapeutic Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin type A (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and others) is reconstituted and administered in small volumes (0.01 to 0.1ml per injection site) using 1ml syringes. For therapeutic botulinum applications (spasticity, hyperhidrosis, chronic migraine), the same 1ml syringe is used with 25G to 30G needles. For aesthetic applications requiring finer control, see our 1ml pre-filled glass Luer-lock syringes which offer glass barrel advantages for aesthetic injectables.

Luer-slip vs Luer-lock — Which to Use for Insulin

Frequently Asked Questions

Luer-slip syringes have a plain male taper tip that friction-fits into a standard female Luer seat - simple and fast to connect, suitable for low-pressure clinical applications including insulin injection, allergen testing, and tuberculin skin testing. Luer-lock syringes have an additional threaded collar that provides a secure mechanical connection resistant to pull-off and rotation - required for high-pressure applications such as contrast injection and pressurized drug delivery. For insulin and most standard clinical injections, Luer-slip is appropriate and preferred for its ease of use.

Compatible needle gauges: 25G (0.50mm), 26G (0.45mm), and 27G (0.40mm) for standard clinical applications. We supply needles pre-attached (with protective cap) or as separate components for manual attachment. Standard clinical needle lengths: 13mm (half inch), 16mm (5/8 inch) for IM, and 6mm to 8mm for subcutaneous injection. Specify gauge, length, and attachment preference at order.

Graduation accuracy is plus or minus 2% of nominal volume per ISO 7886-1, with graduation marks at 0.1ml intervals and a supplementary 0.5ml sub-mark visible at the midpoint of the barrel. The graduation is printed as a permanent scale on the PP barrel using an ISO-validated printing process. Scale legibility is verified under standardized lighting conditions as part of batch quality control.

Beyond insulin administration, 1ml Luer-slip syringes are used for: allergen skin testing (prick test and intradermal injection), tuberculin (PPD) skin testing (Mantoux technique), immunization booster doses, Botulinum toxin injections (aesthetic and therapeutic), local anesthetic injection for minor procedures, and pediatric dosing where volumes less than 1ml must be accurately measured.

Yes. Medical-grade PP barrel and TPE plunger seal contain no latex. The PP barrel is chemically compatible with all commercially available insulin formulations including regular, NPH, lispro, aspart, glargine, and detemir. The TPE seal does not interact with insulin preservatives (phenol, metacresol) or zinc components. Silicone-free TPE option available for insulin preparations sensitive to silicone oil.

Custom barrel label printing: 5,000 pcs minimum per SKU. Outer carton printing with your brand and product description: 10,000 pcs. Standard unbranded stock syringes available from 5,000 pcs for immediate shipment. We can produce custom graduation scales (for example, unit-based scales for insulin pen needle retrofits) from 10,000 pcs MOQ.

Yes. 1ml Luer-slip syringes are commonly used in veterinary practice for small-volume drug administration, allergen testing in small animals, and precise dosing in exotic species. The same product is used for both human and veterinary clinical applications. For veterinary-specific labeling and packaging, contact us for OEM options.

EO (ethylene oxide) sterilization, validated to SAL 10e-6. EO residuals (EO + ECH) are measured per ISO 10993-7 and confirmed below the limits for devices in contact with blood or bone (2 mg/device EO, 0.4 mg/device ECH) before release. Sterilization certificate supplied with every shipment.

Standard 1ml Luer-slip syringes are not directly compatible with insulin pen cartridge adapters, which use a proprietary pen needle threading system. However, 1ml Luer-lock syringes can be used with pen needle adapters available for some pen systems. For pen-compatible syringe configurations, contact us with your specific pen device requirements.

Every plunger is assembled and tested for smooth travel (no sticking or jumping) and leak-free performance at 1.5x rated working pressure. Plunger seal friction force is measured per batch to ensure consistent draw-back force for accurate dose measurement. Seal compression dimension is verified against mold specification to ensure consistent spring-back after compression.
