Platinum-cured (addition-cured) silicone uses a platinum catalyst that remains fully bound in the final polymer — resulting in a product with no catalyst residue, minimal extractables, and full biocompatibility per ISO 10993. Peroxide-cured silicone uses an organic peroxide catalyst that leaves residual breakdown products (primarily benzoic acid derivatives) in the cured material, which can be cytotoxic at sufficient concentrations. Female cat catheterization uses a shorter, wider-bore catheter due to the shorter and wider female urethra — contact us for female-specific designs. For female dogs, the 4.5Fr or 6Fr with appropriate length can be used; specify at inquiry.
4.5Fr (40cm length) is suitable for small to medium breed dogs such as Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, and French Bulldogs. 6Fr (55cm length) is appropriate for medium to large breed dogs such as Labradors, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers. Yes. 100% platinum-cured silicone contains no latex, no DEHP (di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate), no BPA, and no phthalate plasticizers of any type. This is important because PVC catheters frequently contain DEHP as a plasticizer, which has been shown to leach from PVC into tissues in contact — a concern for repeated or prolonged catheterization in animals with compromised renal or hepatic function.
The most common indication is urethral obstruction — a life-threatening emergency predominantly in male cats caused by urethral plugs (crystalline material, mucus, cells) or urethral spasm.
