Charging dock precision at EKINSUN: dock-to-terminal contact alignment held to ±0.3–0.5 mm, with the terminal seat geometry machined to ±0.1 mm. Machined, not moulded — no tooling cost, available from 1 piece.

Critical Design Requirements for a Charging Dock

A charging dock for a custom payment terminal is not a generic accessory — it must align your specific terminal's charging contacts to the dock's pogo pins or spring contacts to within ±0.3–0.5 mm, every time, after years of daily docking. We design this precision in from the start:

  • Locating geometry — a moulded guide channel or raised boss that positions the terminal in a fixed X/Y position relative to the dock; eliminates contact misalignment
  • Docking angle — typically 15–30° recline from vertical for a stable countertop installation; we calculate the centre of gravity and confirm stability
  • Contact access — the cradle geometry ensures the charging contacts on the terminal base are unobstructed and make positive contact when docked
  • Cable routing — internal cable channels route the power cable out through the rear of the base; no exposed cables on the countertop
  • Anti-slip base — moulded-in rubber insert pockets or adhesive silicone pad on the underside; standard addition
  • Optional locking — captive screw or Kensington-compatible locking slot for theft deterrence in high-footfall environments

Contact alignment is everything. A dock that looks correct but misaligns the contacts by 0.5 mm causes intermittent charging failures. We verify contact alignment in the CAD before manufacturing and test with a real terminal before shipping.

Off-the-Shelf Dock or Custom Dock?

Not every terminal needs a custom cradle, and the honest answer is sometimes a catalog part. The dividing line is whose geometry the dock has to match:

Your situationOff the shelf? What to do
Standard terminal from a major maker, charging on its own baseYes — the maker's dock existsBuy the OEM dock. It was tooled for that model and a custom build cannot beat it on price
Terminal charges over an exposed USB-C port and just needs to stand uprightYes — universal stands are stockedBuy a universal stand. Custom work adds nothing a catalog stand doesn't already do
Your own terminal housing with pogo-pin pads — no dock exists for a shell that is yoursNoCradle machined or cast to your housing's curvature, pad positions held to ±0.3–0.5 mm
Counter design fixes the footprint, docking angle or cable exitNoAngle set anywhere in the 15–30° window, centre of gravity checked, cable routed out the rear
Pilot run of 1–50 docks before committing to injection toolingNo — dock makers start at tooling volumesCNC machined 6061 aluminium or vacuum-cast PC/ABS from 1 piece — no tooling cost

On materials: a countertop dock earns nothing from 304 stainless — stability comes from footprint and centre of gravity, not steel mass — and 7075's strength premium is equally wasted on a static cradle. The usual build is a machined 6061 base or a cast PC/ABS body, anodised or textured to match the terminal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Typically ±0.3–0.5 mm for reliable pogo-pin contact. We achieve this with a moulded locating feature that seats the terminal in a fixed position every time.

Yes. We design the cradle geometry at the correct docking angle (15–30°) with a low centre of gravity and anti-slip base pads as standard.

Yes. Send the terminal (or photos) and the charging contact position. We design the dock geometry, confirm contact alignment in CAD, then manufacture. Design is free with your quote.

Yes. Additional ports and cable routing channels can be moulded into the dock base for a tidy countertop installation.
