At M32 the cable stops being light

This is the honest difference between this size and the smaller steps. At M16 or M20 a thin stock reducer is fine — the cable weighs nothing and the joint only has to seal. By M32 you are usually into armoured or heavy multicore cable, and that cable hangs off the entry. The reducer sits in the middle of the lever arm.

Stock brass and nylon reducers are dimensioned for sealing, not for carrying a hanging cable. Their wall is thin at the thread root, which is exactly where the bending stress concentrates. What we make is turned from solid with the wall section left in, so the joint takes the load instead of the thread root taking it.

Quick test: if the cable is light, both ends are ×1.5 and there is room for a standard body — buy the catalogue reducer, it is cheaper and it works. If the cable is armoured, the conduit is heavy, or the entry is on a machine that vibrates, the wall section is the whole point.

The other reasons this size gets machined

  • The pitch is not 1.5 mm on both ends — a mechanical M32×2.0 is nowhere in the gland ranges
  • One side is PG, not metric — PG 29 to M32 is the pair on older German equipment
  • The stock reducer is too long for the gap behind a crowded gland plate
  • The standard hex fouls the neighbouring gland, so the across-flats has to come down
  • Bonding and screening continuity through the joint matters on a drive cabinet, which rules out plastic
  • The specification calls for 316L and the stock part is brass or nylon
  • An existing sealing arrangement must be preserved so the IP rating survives the extra joint
  • You need a mix of sizes — M32→M25 alongside M25→M20 and M20→M16 — on one order and one delivery

All metric gland threads share one pitch. M12, M16, M20, M25, M32, M40, M50 and M63 all run 1.5 mm under EN 60423 — so between gland sizes the only variable is diameter. Anything outside that set, including every coarse mechanical pitch, is a machined part by definition.

  • Wall section sized to the load — tell us the cable type and whether it hangs; we leave the material where the bending stress is.
  • Each end cut to its pitch — M32 end and M25 end single-point threaded, chamfered, then gauged.
  • Sealing feature machined in — O-ring groove, faced shoulder or taper, copied from what seals on the part today.
  • Finished & checked — deburred, edges broken, both threads verified with ring and plug gauges before packing.

Why machine an M32 to M25 reducer instead of buying a stock one?

At M32 the cable stops being light. Armoured and heavy multicore cable puts a real bending load on the entry and the reducer sits in the middle of the lever arm. Thin stock reducers are dimensioned for sealing, not for a hanging cable, and they flex or crack at the thread root. A machined adapter is turned from solid with the wall left in. Beyond load, the usual reasons apply — non-standard pitch, PG on one side, too long, hex fouls a neighbour, 316L required, or a seal to preserve.

Which pitches can you cut?

Any combination. The gland default is M32×1.5 to M25×1.5, since all metric gland threads M12–M63 run 1.5 mm under EN 60423. On the mechanical side we also cut M32×2.0, M32×1.0, M25×2.0 and M25×1.0, plus non-standard pitches on request. Both ends are gauged. More on coarse vs fine pitch →

Can you make it as an M25 to M32 enlarger instead?

Yes — and at this size the enlarger is the more common direction. The original entry was sized for a smaller cable, and the retrofit brings in armoured or larger multicore that needs an M32 gland. The M32→M25 reducer is for the opposite case, an oversized knockout with a smaller cable.

Can one end be PG instead of metric?

Yes — PG 29 to M32 is the pair at this size. PG 29 measures 37.0 mm with a 1.59 mm pitch on an 80° flank, against metric's 1.5 mm on 60°, so the two cannot be mated directly. We cut PG on one end and metric on the other in one body. Full PG to metric conversion chart →

Where do M32 entries usually turn up?

Drive and frequency converter cabinets, larger motor terminal boxes, gland plates carrying armoured supply cable, and mining or heavy plant where the conduit itself is heavy. On drives, bonding and screening continuity through the joint usually matters — which rules out plastic and calls for nickel-plated brass or 316L with a metal-to-metal seat.
