JIC and ORB Fitting Size Chart — Dash Size, Thread, Tube OD and O-Ring From -2 to -32, and the Adapter for Each Size

A -6 JIC or ORB fitting has a 9/16-18 UNF thread and fits 3/8 in tube; a -8 has a 3/4-16 UNF thread and fits 1/2 in tube. The dash number is the tube outside diameter in sixteenths of an inch, not the thread. The chart gives the thread, its diameter in millimetres, the threads per inch, the tube size and the ORB O-ring for every dash size from -2 to -32. Tap a row to get a price for that size: standard JIC, AN and ORB adapters can also be supplied from stock, other pairs are machined from 1 piece, and the more pieces you order, the lower the unit price.

JIC and ORB Dash Size Chart — -2 to -32

JIC 37° (SAE J514), AN and SAE ORB fittings of the same dash size have the same straight UNF or UN thread; the dash number is the tube outside diameter in sixteenths of an inch, so -8 is 8/16 = 1/2 in tube with a 3/4-16 thread. EKINSUN LTD is a custom parts manufacturer that machines JIC, AN and ORB adapters to NPT, BSPP, metric or ORFS from 1 piece, and supplies standard sizes from stock as well.

Buying adapters in these sizes? Standard JIC, AN and ORB adapters (for example -6 JIC male × 3/8 NPT male, -8 ORB × -8 JIC) can also be supplied from stock; any other pair is machined to order from 1 piece. The more pieces you order, the lower the unit price. Name both ends, the material and the quantity; quote in 12 hours.

Threads per SAE J514 (JIC) and SAE J1926-1 (ORB port); AN fittings use the same threads. Thread OD is the nominal size in millimetres; a caliper across a used or plated thread reads a little less. -3, -5, -10 and -14 have no NPT of the same nominal size. ORFS (O-ring face seal, SAE J1453) uses different threads for the same dash size: see the fitting thread identification chart.

JIC, AN, ORB and 45° Flare — Same Thread, Different Seal

The thread holds the joint together; the seal is somewhere else, and that is what decides which parts work together. A JIC and an AN fitting of the same dash size mate and seal. A JIC male end threads into an ORB port of the same size but does not seal there, and in some sizes a 45° flare nut threads onto a 37° JIC cone and still leaks.

How to Identify a JIC or ORB Fitting

Measure the thread outside diameter with a caliper, count the threads per inch with a pitch gauge, then look at the end: a cone at the nose is a JIC or AN flare (check 37° against 45° with a seat-angle gauge), an O-ring at the base of a straight thread is ORB, an O-ring in a flat face is ORFS, and a thread that gets smaller towards the end is NPT or BSPT. Match the diameter and the thread count to the chart. The diameter alone is not enough: several JIC and ORB threads are within about a millimetre of an NPT or BSPP thread.

Threads a caliper alone cannot tell apart: JIC / ORB threads and the NPT or BSPP threads within 1.1 mm of them, and what separates them

JIC and ORB Adapters by Dash Size — to NPT, BSPP and Metric

An adapter joins a JIC or ORB end to another standard, another dash size or another shape. We make straight adapters, 90° and 45° elbows, tees and bulkheads in zinc-plated carbon steel, 316L (1.4404) or 304 (1.4301) stainless and brass CW614N, and 6061 aluminium for low-pressure fuel and oil lines. Tell us the working pressure and we choose the material and wall to suit.

What to Send for a Price

Both ends: the dash size and type (JIC male, JIC female swivel, ORB male) or the pipe or metric thread; the shape (straight, 90° or 45° elbow, tee, bulkhead); the material; the working pressure; and the quantity. For a replacement, a photo of the fitting beside a rule with the caliper reading and the thread count is enough. Quote in 12 hours; from 1 piece, and the more pieces, the lower the unit price.

JIC and ORB Fitting FAQ

A -6 JIC fitting is for 3/8 in (9.53 mm) outside-diameter tube, because the dash number counts sixteenths of an inch: 6/16 = 3/8. The thread is 9/16-18 UNF, 14.29 mm across the crests. A -6 fitting does not have a 3/8 in thread.

The dash number is the tube outside diameter in sixteenths of an inch: -4 is 4/16 = 1/4 in, -8 is 1/2 in, -16 is 1 in. It names the tube, not the thread: a -8 fitting has a 3/4-16 UNF thread.

They have the same 37° seat and the same thread for each dash size, and they mate and seal together; outside aerospace they are used interchangeably. AN fittings are made and inspected to military specifications with tighter tolerances, so a system specified with AN parts needs AN parts.

Yes, the thread for each dash size is the same on both (-8 is 3/4-16 UNF), but they seal in different places: JIC on a 37° cone, ORB on an O-ring squeezed into a chamfer at the mouth of the port. A JIC male end threads into an ORB port but does not seal there.

An AS568 900-series O-ring whose last two digits are the dash size: -4 uses 904, -6 uses 906, -8 uses 908, -12 uses 912 and -16 uses 916. The ORB port itself is defined by SAE J1926-1 (ISO 11926-1).
