A wing nut is torque by hand: the span of the wings is the lever, and the standard fixes span, height and thread per size. Pressed nuts are light and cheap, cast nuts are stronger and rounder in the hand, rod-wing nuts are the biggest lever of all. Beyond M12 in pressed form, beyond M24 in cast, or in any fine pitch, stainless above M12, or a span for a gloved hand, the wing nut is machined.

What to send for a wing nut or wing screw that is not stocked

  • Thread and pitch, and hand (left-hand wing nuts exist on counter-rotating fittings).
  • Wing span tip to tip, and wing height, if a hand or a guard sets them.
  • Body height, if a long stud must be covered or a low profile is needed.
  • Material: 304 for outdoor, 316L for marine, brass for electrical or decorative, steel zinc for indoor.
  • For a wing screw: thread length and whether a shoulder or a dog point is wanted.
  • Quantity and finish.

Read the pitch before you order the wing nut. Lay a steel rule along ten thread crests and divide by ten: 10 mm over ten pitches is a 1 mm pitch (M6 coarse), 12.5 mm is M8 coarse, 15 mm is M10 coarse, 17.5 mm is M12 coarse. A reading that is not a round number of millimetres is an inch thread, and a reading that is shorter than the coarse pitch for that diameter is a fine thread. Frequently asked questions

A pressed wing nut is stamped from sheet and formed; it is light and cheap and stocked to M12. A cast wing nut is a solid casting with rounded wings; it is stronger, kinder to the hand and stocked to M24. Both are DIN 315 forms.

As much as a hand can put on the wings, which depends on the span and the person; that is why the span is the specification that matters. A rod-wing nut gives the most, a pressed nut the least. A wing nut is never the fastener for a joint that must be torqued to a value.
