A circlip sits in a groove and takes a thrust load on its face: the groove diameter, groove width and ring thickness are what the standard fixes, per shaft or bore size. Two things are worth measuring before any ring is ordered: the groove diameter with a caliper on the groove bottom, and the groove width with a feeler. A groove cut to an inch or a maker’s own table will not take a DIN ring, and a worn groove needs a thicker ring or a re-cut groove.

What to send for a ring that is not stocked

  • Shaft or bore diameter, groove diameter, groove width and depth.
  • Thrust load and whether it is steady or shock; rotational speed if the ring spins.
  • Material: 304 / 1.4122 for corrosion, 316L for chemical, beryllium copper for non-magnetic, PEEK for insulation, spring steel for plain duty.
  • Ring form: circlip with lugs, E-clip, wire ring, lugged heavy ring, or your own shape.
  • Quantity; a single ring for a machine that is stopped is a normal order.

Frequently asked questions

DIN 471 rings are external: they sit in a groove on a shaft and are opened with pliers to fit. DIN 472 rings are internal: they sit in a groove in a bore and are compressed to fit. Both are sized by the shaft or bore diameter, with the groove dimensions given in the standard.

From the groove, not the shaft. Measure the groove diameter at the bottom and the groove width; look those up in the DIN 471 or 472 table to find the ring, and check the ring thickness fits the width. A groove that matches no DIN row was cut for an inch or a maker's ring.

Rings that were opened only as far as the pliers needed usually can, but a ring that has been over-spread stays enlarged and will not seat. Rings in critical or high-speed assemblies are replaced with the part.
