Flange Nuts — Serrated, Plain, Nyloc and All-Metal, and the Flange Nut Turned When the Flange, the Height or the Pitch Is Not DIN

A flange nut is a hex nut with its own washer, formed in one piece: the flange spreads the load, the serrations bite, and one part goes on instead of two. The standards fix the flange diameter and height per size and stop at M20. The buyer who needs a wider flange for a slotted hole, a taller nut for a long bolt, or M24 in a serrated flange is off the shelf.

What to send for a flange nut that is not on the shelf

  • Thread and pitch; fine and left-hand are the commonest reason a flange nut is turned.
  • Flange diameter and whether it is serrated or plain; the hole or slot it must cover.
  • Height, or the thread engagement you need, if DIN height is wrong.
  • Across-flats, if the spanner space is limited.
  • Material and grade: 304, 316L, class 8 or 10.9, brass; and the mating bolt grade.
  • Quantity and finish.

Read the pitch before you order the flange nut. Lay a steel rule along ten thread crests and divide by ten: 10 mm over ten pitches is a 1 mm pitch (M6 coarse), 12.5 mm is M8 coarse, 15 mm is M10 coarse, 17.5 mm is M12 coarse. A reading that is not a round number of millimetres is an inch thread, and a reading that is shorter than the coarse pitch for that diameter is a fine thread. Frequently asked questions

The serrated flange has radial teeth on its underside that bite into the mating face and resist loosening; the plain flange is smooth and only spreads the load. Serrated nuts suit bare or zinc-plated steel; plain nuts suit painted, anodised, plastic or soft aluminium faces that serrations would cut.

In most joints, yes: the flange is the washer, formed in one piece and always the right size for the thread. It cannot replace a washer that is larger than the DIN flange, a hardened washer under a 10.9 bolt in soft material, or a washer chosen to protect a coating.

Roughly 2.2 to 2.4 times the thread diameter, fixed per size by the standard. A hole or slot wider than that is the usual reason a flange nut is turned to a custom flange diameter.
