Standoff Configurations — Which to Choose
Standoffs are grouped by the threads on each end. The right one depends on what bolts to what:

Each comes hex (wrench grip for torque) or round (tight or decorative spaces), plus shouldered/stepped pillars. Thread sizes: imperial #2-56, #4-40, #6-32, #8-32, 10-32, 1/4"-20 and up; metric M2, M2.5, M3, M4 and up — including non-standard pitches you can't buy off the shelf. For electrical isolation we also machine plastic (Delrin, nylon, PTFE) standoffs.
Material Choice
Aluminium is light and anodizable; brass is the classic conductive choice for electronics; stainless resists corrosion; steel carries load. For electrical isolation we machine Delrin, nylon or PTFE. Threads are cut clean and gauged so they run smoothly both ends — see CNC turning.
