Because the person typing "part that connects driveshaft to transmission" is usually holding the broken one. For a listed car the story ends at a parts store, and the table says so in green. The flange yoke. It bolts to the pinion flange — also called the companion flange — on the nose of the differential, with a universal joint between the yoke and the driveshaft tube. On listed cars all three are aftermarket parts; on obsolete or converted drivelines the yoke and flange are machinable geometry, measured from the worn originals.
The bellhousing carries the structure; inside it a flywheel and clutch make the connection on a manual, a flexplate and torque converter on an automatic. When two units were never meant to meet — an engine swap with no bellhousing listed anywhere — the connection becomes a machined adapter plate, drilled to both bolt patterns with the dowel positions carried over, because the dowels, not the bolts, do the aligning.
